Case Introduction

This patient story reveals how our little patient fell victim to early childhood caries due to the lapse in regular dental examinations. This unfortunate scenario highlights the importance of timely preventive care, emphasizing the significance of routine check-ups in safeguarding children’s oral health. Through this story, we aim to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with delayed or missed routine dental visits, underscoring the crucial role of preventive measures in maintaining a child’s bright and healthy smile.

Chief Complaint

Siya approached us with a chief complaint of noticing black lines on her upper front teeth. During her visit a year ago, she was cavity-free. Regrettably, her second visit, a year and a few months later, revealed the development of new cavities. A thorough examination uncovered multiple initial carious lesions between her upper anterior teeth. Now, our goal is to address these concerns and ensure Siya’s continued oral health and satisfaction with our dental care.

Diagnosis / Medical Assessment

We conducted diagnostic radiographs to accurately evaluate the extent of the carious lesion, which is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment planning. An increase in the extent of the carious lesion may require pulp therapy. Fortunately, the radiographs confirmed that Siya did not require pulp therapy. However, Siya’s teeth were affected by the early initiation of early childhood caries. Before proceeding with treatment, we took the time to explain to the parents the factors contributing to the development of cavities, aiming to prevent future occurrences and promote better oral health habits.

Our holistic approach to managing early childhood caries is divided into two parts. Firstly, parents implemented home hygiene measures to decrease the bacterial load in the child’s mouth, preventing further occurrences of cavities. Secondly, a minimally invasive treatment plan is tailored to address the present condition. .

Following the treatment plan, comprehensive oral prophylaxis was performed, and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) was applied to address proximal carious lesions. The SDF application was conducted without drilling, aimed at halting the cavity’s progression, eliminating cavity-causing microbes, and discouraging further spread of the caries. SDF is non-invasive, painless, and comfortable for the little one.

The treatment followed with fluoride varnish application to prevent new cavities. Fluoride in the varnish penetrates the tooth enamel, strengthening the tooth. Parents received instructions regarding diet modification and oral hygiene.

Gentle Solutions of Non-Invasive Dental Treatments for Managing Early Childhood Caries?

We prioritize non-invasive dental treatments to manage early childhood caries, aiming to prevent fearful experiences for young children. However, non-invasive dental treatment is most effective in the early phases of caries initiation, when the tooth pulp is not yet infected and only the outer part of the teeth is involved.

Why do we use non-invasive dental treatment?

Non-invasive treatments are generally more comfortable for little patients.

They focus on preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.

Patients (children) often experience faster recovery times compared to invasive procedures.

Non-invasive treatments are less intimidating, reducing anxiety in younger patients.

By addressing issues early, non-invasive treatments help prevent further dental damage.

Procedures are typically quicker, minimising children’s time spent on the dental chair.

Why do we use SDF (silver diamine fluoride)?

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) halts the progression of dental decay.

It is a non-invasive treatment, avoiding the need for drilling.

SDF application is painless, making it suitable for children.

It helps preserve existing tooth structures, preventing the need for extensive restoration.

The application process is quick and comfortable for children.

After Care

We always want parents to understand the importance of home oral hygiene and diet modification, as it plays a major role in preventing cavities and reducing bacterial load in the mouth to prevent gum disease in children.

Home hygiene includes three important regimes.

Brushing children’s teeth using age appropriate fluoridated toothpaste.

  Flossing regularly.

  Use an antibacterial mouth rinse.

Why is it important to brush your child’s teeth with age appropriate fluoridated toothpaste?

Thorough brushing eliminates plaque for clean teeth.

Fluoridated toothpaste strengthens enamel, preventing cavities.

Brushing promotes healthy gums and reduces inflammation.

Proper brushing combats bad breath for lasting freshness.

Why is it important to floss your child’s teeth?

Flossing eliminates plaque between teeth where brushes can’t reach.

Reduces the risk of cavities by cleaning tight spaces.

Flossing supports healthy gums by preventing gum disease.

Removes food particles for improved breath.

Why is it important to use an Antibacterial mouth rinse?

Antibacterial mouth rinses eliminate harmful bacteria in the mouth.

Reduces the risk of gingivitis and periodontal issues.

Controls bad breath by targeting odour-causing bacteria.

Helps prevent cavities by reducing bacterial growth.

Enhances oral hygiene when used alongside brushing.

Supports a healthy mouth and prevents infections.
